It seems like there’s confusion on your poll about whether or not you wanted to include ‘chosen family’ among ‘people who raised you.’ It’s not how I read it but I guess there’s a difference between having a partner who doesn’t introduce you to anyone vs just not introducing to the people they’re biologically related to/their guardians/their adoptive family/etc.

So yeah I was specifically trying my best to refer to the family that you didn't pick for yourself you know biological, adopted, foster anyone that raised you that you didn't chose so chosen family should not be taken into consideration when answering the poll

man okay so I used to play mechquest and dragonfable back in like, 2008 when I was a kid with very little patience to follow a storyline. coming back as an adult and finishing mechquest has absolutely slapped me silly with how deep and serious the story is in between all the absurdist humour. I have. so many emotions over the whole storyline, and especially so many thoughts about the unique form of tragedy that is The Reset.

You save the world but it's not the world anymore. You and your friends survive but you don't know each other anymore- have nothing left of the lives you fought to keep. You 'save' everything but it's still all gone. Everything you knew and loved, gone, and you don't even know what you've lost. You can't even keep the memory of what you had- and that's almost kinder compared to being one of the 3ish people who DO remember... and have to live around everyone else who doesn't, knowing their closest friends look at them and see a stranger, and that they may as well be because they aren't that person they remember being.

And to top it all off, that terrible sacrifice doesn't even end it. you're still left fighting impossible and devastating wars over and over. It's the tragedy of doomed time loops with extra layers of devastating all over the place. The GEARS University students being forced to become soldiers because they're all that's left to protect their homeworld. The horrors of the Shadowscythe virus taking over friends and loved ones you may be forced to put down to save yourself. The town of Falconreach burning over and over because no matter how hard they fight, it's never enough. The people like Sha'rae who sacrifice themselves to try and prevent tyrrany from seizing power, only for it to be utterly useless.

Anyway the brainrot is severe and especially dangerous since I'm coming into exam season and all my hyperfixated brain wants to do is chew on glass about these games.

for this fort i purposefully embarked with a nearly-dead civilization, one that had only a handful of survivors and no sites. we chose an isolated spot near a volcano, on level ground, and undertook a project to ensure The Tufted Abbey would never be destroyed again

step 1: dig deep into the earth, just above the caverns (i like worlds with only 1 cavern layer)

step 2: start mining iron and flux in massive quantities.

step 3: start making as much steel as we can get our greedly little mitts on. turn it into chain leggings.

step 4: melt down the chain leggings. repeat step 3-4 to use the infinite metal exploit. we need a lot of steel for this project!

step 5: excavate a very large vertical space, and build our fort in it. line the walls of the cavern with steel. make the floors and walls out of steel. make the whole damn fort and almost everything in it out of steel. iron would do, of course, but any old human can work iron. steel is dwarfier.

the fort has a single egress, from which the deeper mines, the caverns, and the surface are all accessed; it can be sealed through a lever in the control room, cutting the fort off from the outside world completely. the fort is wholly self-sufficient once the switch is thrown.

but since we're roleplaying paranoid survivalists, we also need to consider what happens if something gets into the fort and is there after it is sealed off. what do we do then? well, that's why we embarked near a handy volcano. it didn't just allow us to build magma forges from the get-go (although it did also do that), it gives us a handy source of magma for the purge system.

the four grates at the corners of the main chamber all connect to pump-fed magma pipes and, through fortification-vents throughout the fortress, these allow us to swiftly purge the fort of any [CONTAMINATION] that might threaten our survival. the control room at the top of the fortress is the only room that isn't subject to [CONTAMINATION] control, allowing for a continuity-of-government situation for selected officials and soldiers who we know are trustworthy. it has its own small dormitory and food supply, long enough to hold out indefinitely in case a purge is necessary. once the [CONTAMINATION] has been dealt with, the magma can be drained into the caverns.

(although the fort has an autonomous internal power supply fed by turning an underground lake into an underground river, this power supply is designed to be flooded by magma last in the event of a [CONTAMINATION] event. although the fort, most furniture, and some of the more valuable goods like metals would survive a purge, some rebuilding would still be necessary.)

The whole framing of Lestat as the sole symbol of patriarchy that fandom is so desperate to put him in doesn't work unless you deliberately ignore how he was also a victim of rape and abuse before he was turned. People want him to be fit into this strict role of "father figure/violent husband/perpetrator" that is only that and not even a whole person, and in doing so they need to push aside the fact that despite being his family's provider, he was also pushed into that role when his father forbid him from joining a monastery or gaining an education that he wanted. Lestat wanted to run away with a theater group as a kid, and actually managed to do so once Gabrielle gave him her blessing and monetary support in order to go to Paris. He didn't always want to be the provider, he was forced into that role and became despondent when he thought he would never get a chance to leave his home.

His new life prior to being turned is pretty much the antithesis to the whole "Lestat is a manly man who would sooner throw up than be compared to a woman" spiel: he lived with another man in Paris while also being an actor, having left his family and "responsibility" to them. The only family member he was ever close to was his mother, all the other male members shunned or ridiculed him. Add onto that the fact that his turning firmly placed him within the role of the damsel/victim: he's kidnapped from his bed by a stranger, taken into a tower and left to rot while being fed on for a week, before then being raped and violently turned all while never even being asked if he would consent to it in any normal circumstance. But you of course have to ignore all of this if you want him to only represent the aggressor/patriarch while Louis is the helpless unhappy matriarch of the family.

My issue isn't that I think Louis isn't a victim, it's that it's not unrealistic for Lestat to be an aggressor/abuser while also displaying traits that aren't regularly assigned to stereotypical depictions of male characters. He's abusive to Claudia while also having been a victim of abuse from his own family. He's not a good maker/teacher, but he also didn't even have one when he was turned. He's the provider/attempted protector of the family and seemed to like being that, while also having run away from his own family prior to this to act in a theater in Paris. He's a rich white man while also being obviously effeminate in public spaces, even to Tom's own bigoted humor.

Like Louis' own complicated story with being his family's benefactor and provider, you can't firmly place Lestat as being one thing or another in terms of gender ideals without deliberately ignoring parts about him that don't fit this. And I don't think it's an absolute necessity, when even in Louis' own story, Lestat isn't stripped of his effeminate mannerisms or behavior while also being the abusive maker/father/lover.

I think what’s pissing me off the most about 15’s regeneration aside from the fact I just wish it hadn’t happened and we still had Ncuti, is how ENTIRELY NEEDLESS it was

He poured regeneration energy out to shift the world just enough to make Poppy real and give Belinda this child she never originally had, this child that was built from the Doctor’s memories of seeing space baby Poppy one time and wished up by Conrad in his fascist heteronormative queerphobic ableist hellscape. And once he’s done? Once he’s shattered the old world and moved everything over to the new one? He finds out the baby is 100% human in the end, and that she has now always been trying to get back to this baby she has been changed to have had the whole time. He did all that, effectively killed his current self to get his daughter back, and she isn’t even still his daughter. And now Belinda’s life has been rewritten entirely unbeknownst to her and she is lumped with this kid she was never originally supposed to have. And now she can’t travel with him even though she would love to.

And that’s all that comes from 15 pouring his soul out? Idk it just really dampens the whole regeneration for me.
